PIERCING AFTERCARE
505 Rideau Street, Ottawa, ON. 613-562-8282
Piercer: Ben/ Kip
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
1) DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PIERCING PRIOR TO WASHING YOUR HANDS.
2) CLEAN YOUR PIERCING WITH SUGGESTED SOAP no more than twice a day. Suggested Soaps: Satin, Ivory or fragrance free mild anti-microbial soap. While showering, pre-soak* with warm water for 2 minutes and lather up a pearl size drop of the soap to clean the jewellery and the piercing. Leave the cleanser on the piercing no more than thirty seconds, then rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of the soap from the piercing.
One very important step is the pre-soak.
*The pre-soak is done prior to the actual cleaning. Soaking softens all of the white blood cells (dried matter attached to the jewelry. Turning or moving your jewelry while white blood cells are dry could possibly tear the newly formed passage and prolong the healing process.
3) SALINE soaks at least two to three times daily, during the healing period. Using fresh gauze, makeup pad or a cotton ball saturated with saline solution, apply to the piercing with a little pressure for 3-5 minutes.
4) Let air dry.
WHAT TO DO
- Rinse oral piercing with non-alcoholic mouthwash (Oral-B or Crest), after each meal, Drink or smoke.
- Make sure your bedding is kept clean and changed regularly. Showering is safer than taking a bath.
- Call us or come by if you have any questions. Come by and see us after 2-3 months for a check up.
WHAT IS NORMAL?
- Initially: some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness or bruising.
- During healing: some discoloration, itching, secretion of a whitish-yellow fluid (not pus) that will form some crust on the jewelry. The tissue may tighten around the jewelry as it heals. Once healed: the jewelry may not move freely in the piercing; DO NOT force it. If you fail to include your piercing as a part of your daily hygiene routine, normal bodily secretions may accumulate.
- A piercings may seem healed before healing is complete. Piercings heal from the outside in, and although it feels healed the tissue remains fragile on the inside. BE PATIENT, and keep cleaning throughout the entire healing period.
- Even healed piercing can shrink or close in minutes after having been there for years! This varies from person to person; if you like your piercing, leave the jewelry in place.
WHAT TO AVOID
- Avoid the use of rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, Betadine, Hibiclens or ointment.
- Avoid undue trauma such as friction from clothing, excessive motion of the area, playing with the jewellery and vigorous cleaning. These activities can cause the formation of unsightly and uncomfortable scar tissue, migration, prolonged healing, and other complications.
- Avoid all oral contact, rough play, and contact with others bodily fluids on or near your piercing during healing.
- Avoid stress and recreational drug use including excessive caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
- During healing, avoid submerging the piercing in bodies of water such as lakes, pools, Jacuzzis, etc.
- Avoid all beauty and personal care products on or around the piercing including cosmetics, lotions, and sprays, etc.
-Do not remove jewellery from a potentially infected piercing. Contact us first for advice and seek medical advice.
- Don t Share Aftercare products with friends and family.
Also, Any antiseptic may become contaminated if not handled using aseptic technique. Clean your hands before cleaning your piercing
Healing Period Reference DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PIERCING PRIOR TO WASHING YOUR HANDS. Until the healing period is complete, only touch your piercing while you are cleaning it. Let air dry and keep pierced area dry at all times except during cleaning
